About Jungle safari
Jungle safari as sports started early in the history of Nepal during the Rana regime. Chitwan used to be popular with high dignitaries from Europe especially from England. They are taken there to hunt tigers and other wild animals. Elephant used to be the vehicle on which they ride and hunt. There are many remarkable books about this. Now this sport and spot has turned into jungle activities for tourist. Instead of gun now the tourist shoot with their camera.
Best time: In autumn season from October to middle of December and in spring season from March to April are best. May is quite but very hot in the southern plain.
The jungle tour includes activities like elephant ride and walk in the jungle. Canoe-ride in Rapti-river to see birds and crocodile in their natural habitats. Jeep-excursion to go deep inside the jungle to see rare species. Visit Machan (high elevated tower) to see tiger and other wild animal from close range for close up animal sighting. Local folk cultural dance in the evening is part of the program. This tour in the jungle is suitable option to extend your visit.
Approach : There are 3 major national parks that are popular with tourist. To go to Chitwan National park you can either drive all the way from Kathmandu (about 170km) or Pokhara (about 160km) or raft down the Trishuli and Narayani river. You can also take flight to Bharatpur. Sukhilaphanta national park is at a convenient distence from Mahendranagar and Delhi. There are scheduled flight and bus services from Kathmandu to Mahendranagar. Royal Bardia National park can be approached by flight or regular buys service to Nepaljung. From Nepaljung the national park is about 1 hour drive. There are bus service from Kathmandu to the approach to the park. Koshi Tappu national park can be approached by flight from kathmandu to Janakpur. But the regular flight schedule are often disrupted so you should check flight condition If you like heavy rafting and have plenty of time it is best to start rafting from Dolalghat (90km from Kathmandu) on Bhotekoshi river to Koshi barrage; It is about 7 days to the park. There are also scheduled flight to Birtnagar and from Birtnagar travel by bus or jeep to the park.
