All our overland trips give you enough time to visit Lhasa, which has long been known as the Forbidden City. The mighty Potala Palace, Drepung Monastery, Barkhor Bazaar and the holy Jokhang Temple are just a few of the fascinating sights we will take you.
Tashilhunpo monastery, in Shigatshe, is the most important monastery outside Lhasa. The first Dalai Lama founded it in 1447, in the honor of his teacher Kadrub. Gendun Zhuba was the first abbot of the monastery. In 1600 at the invitation of the monastery the 4th Panchen Lama (2nd only to Dalai Lama in rank) became 16th abbot making the monastery official abbot of the Panchen Lama. En-route to Lhasa stop at Gyantse to visit the golden pagoda or Palgor Chorten. It is the most famous monument in Tibet. It was built in 15th century for worship only. The top of the pagoda is made of copper heavily gilded with gold. On the last day of the travel you drive along the shore of Yamdrok-lake. To the Tibetan it is known as “Turquoise Lake”. The road gradually climbs up to Kamba-la (pass) –4786m and descends to the valley. The journey from the floor of the valley is about 1 hour spectacular drive along the bank of Brahmaputra- river, past yak skin boat and giant carved Buddha, through Tibetan villages and then into the Lhasa valley itself for your first glimpse of the golden roofs of the Potala Palace. All these places are included in our itinerary. Please check out your suitable itinerary.
