A quick escape to the wilderness.

  • Helambu is the closest region to the north of Kathmandu. This is one of the best short trek and a quick escape to the wilderness for tourist who doesn't have enough time in Nepal. The region is inhabited by an indigenous people called Hyolmo. It provides a typical glimpse of life in the village of Nepal.

The Tamang and Sherpa villages of Helambu in the north of Kathmandu valley presents an easy getaway. This area because of its low elevation and the Sherpa villages make it an interesting 6-day loop. Starting with a short drive from Kathmandu to Sundarijal the trail to Helambu climbs on to the Shivapuri ridge from where there are sweeping views of the central Himalayas. Following a ridge-line, the trek heads north to Thare Pati before turning east to Melamchi Gaon and Tarke Gyang the principle villages of this area. From here we visit Shermathang before descending to the Melamchi river to end our trek with a drive Melamchi Bazaar back to Kathmandu.

After passing through an army camp, the trails enterS the Shivapuri Watershed and Wildlife Reserve, a 112 sq. km walled area. Most of the Shivapuri ridge is a dense forest of pine, oak and rhododendron trees. Pass through a Tamang village of Mulkharka and Borlang Bhanjyang. The trail continues gradually to the top of the ridge. The sunrise on the Himalaya, from Annapurna to Everest is impressive there. Chisopani is a nice small settlement. Overnight at Lodge/Tea House.

The trail through forest and Sherpa village of Shermathang is pleasant walk. Crossing a stream on a suspension bridge, the trail makes a short final climb to reach the prosperous Sherpa village of Melamchigaon at 2530m. Melamchigaon has a very glossy Goma with a line of prayer flags at the front and brightly painted walls and statues. From Melamchigaon, the trail continues to descend to the Riverside Lodge and the Melamchi Khola (river) which is crossed on a sturdy suspension bridge at 1890m. Tarkeghyang is the largest village in Helambu and the destination for most trekkers in this region. There are several places for nice swimming on a hot day.
