Village in Annapurna Range
  • In the past touring in Nepal has meant either trekking along the trails or staying in specially built resorts. Getting to know the locals and their culture has been difficult. In Sirubari, one can experience a stay in an unspoiled village living as a family member. You will be welcomed into the community and invited to stay in the home of one of the village families. Each night there will be entertainment provided by the community. One evening this will be in the form of traditional Gurung and Nepali dancing and singing.

Sirubari village is a totally unspoiled Gurung settlement set in the hills at 1700 meters above sea level. Sirubari village is a short drive and walk from Pokhara, the major tourist center for the Annapurna region. It is reached from the road to Lumbini. The trail to the village is steep but well made and most people manage to reach the village after a three-hour walk. The hills above Sirubari village offer panoramic views of Mt. Annapurna massif including Macchapuchare, Manaslu, Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri, Lamjung and Hiunchuli. The climate is ideal at any time during the September to June season with warm days and cool nights.

The accommodation is simple but comfortable with clean room with good beds as well as clean toilet facilities (squat toilets). The food is delicious and you will be eating your meals as one of the family. During your stay, you will be able to feel what it is like to live the life of a Nepali villager. Walk with your family while they go about their daily chores, tending animals, tilling the fields, or simply sitting in the sun talking to the neighbors. Feel free to wander, safely, by yourself and look at all of the developments that the community have supported and funded. And, at the end of the stay, you will be overwhelmed by the farewell that your new family will give you. Even if you never come this way again, the village and its people will remain in your heart forever.

    ADDITIONAL ACTIVITIES:

The following can be incorporated into any programme for special interest groups provided at least four people per group participate.

    Rock climbing:

There are some undeveloped rock faces above the village which will give challenging climbing. For experienced climbers only, own equipment required.

    Cave exploration:

There is an unexplored limestone cave near the road head at Arjunchaupari. The cave has some formations and is at least seventy five metres deep. Only locals have entered the cave so far. There is an abandoned mine (copper) above the village which could prove interesting provided it is safe. Preliminary exploration will take place this summer.

    Bird watching:

The jungle above Sirubari is rich in bird life. A day or more can be set aside for serious ornithologists to spend time here. Animal life is also abundant.

    Meditation/Buddhism study tours:

The Gurung villagers around the valley are all followers of a particular style of Tibetan Buddhism. Scholars or recent converts alike can spend time in meditation in the peaceful atmosphere of the village and its surrounds.

    Extended sightseeing:

Longer trips around the valley rim are possible but overnight stays outside the village will be required. Tents or local accommodation can be arranged.
